So after years of blabbing about it, I've finally got myself a plot of soil in a local community garden. C and I are splitting a 5' x 10' plot with another couple and boy am I glad we have them to help us out. The couple did a bit of urban gardening last year, so we are being helped this year from the mistakes they learned from.
Thanks to the heavy rains and cold snaps, we didn't get to put anything in the ground until this week. We decided to do a raised bed, which gave us about 6" more soil on top of the 4" of earth in the garden. We are part of an organic community, so we had to use untreated wood and are not allowed to use plastics or chemically treated anything in our landscaping. This will get interesting once we have to do some pest control. I'll be doing some mad scientist mixing in my kitchen!
Because of the late planting, we opted for plants for some items, like tomatoes and peppers (both sweet and hot). Other items like peas, carrots, and lettuce will be going in as seeds. I'm excited to see how we fare and what kind of items we'll be harvesting. Anyone else doing a community garden or home garden this year? What are you all growing?
