Migration

300

Check out Paraphernalia's new line, the Migration Collection.
From the website: "The Migration Collection is inspired by the desire to travel after the cabin fever of Winter. It reflects dreams of blue skies, green landscapes, the smell of the Sea and Halcyon days of adventure."

Reusable cup cozy (with rolling action to clip to your keychain) from Cup Kozy

Interestingness

Il_430xn20066035_2Cute head thingy from Hysteria (Image from her Etsy shop).

• View some key MAD magazine fold-ins interactively online. Very cool.

What would Nora do? An article discussing the attitude of one of my favorite characters, Nora Charles from The Thin Man.

• Rhiannon's Flickr set of 1920s-1930s women.

• Ward's Flickr set of a 1962 Fallout Shelter Handbook. I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to fallout shelter/Red Scare stuff. I'm a fan of the look of propaganda art, what can I say?

• Ms. Vanda's Flickr set of her trip to Paris.

The Sheer Issue

bust measure

I've been restricting myself from buying dresses for spring and instead am stocking up on separates to allow for more versitality. There is something great about creating a million looks off one pencil skirt. There are plenty of 30s and 40s blouses on Ebay right now, but the one issue I have been finding with them is that they are all sheer. Even modern day blouses modeled after 30s and 40s looks are a bit too see-through for my liking. This, of course, was no issue for the ladies of those eras as they would wear full slips under their outfits, but finding full slips and even camis at reasonable prices are quite hard now a days. (and yet half slips are easy to find, but alas, cover the wrong half of the body for blouses!)

I have been using tank tops underneath the blouses, but never was too happy with the look as it would make the whole thing bulky and not very streamlined. To my joy I found a solution while walking through Target the other day. Hanes has these wonderful camis that solve the see-through issue, look great under sheer blouses and are only $8. What is the best is that they come in several colors, all which work with a variety of blouse colors. I got the black and pink - with the black working with dark sheers and the pink working great with light sheers, even whites. I was so happy with my find that I wanted to spread the word to you and possibly prod you to try bringing out your separates for spring.

Keeping me in good spirits...

First April Goodies

Mail goodies have started to creep in at the new apartment. One of which was a crumpled letter from Nikki with a photo of an Everything Will Be OK piece and a photocopy of an article with wonderful stuff for my thesis. Everything a gal needs to keep her going in the last months of her masters program. She is the keenest.

Donovan also gifted me with a handmade letter portfolio for writing letters on the go. It is oh so very cool and even has a place for stamps. You can get your own at her Etsy shop. Donovan and I are also working on new stationery for 16 Sparrows. I think we will be unveiling a new line sometime next week.

In the move I rediscovered many things I forgot about or thought I lost. One of which is a honking ring that used to be my grandmother's. She gave it to me as a teen - it was made by an artist in Venezuela. I never wear rings anymore, but I'm giving this one a chance. It makes me feel like Renée Perle when I wear it. Also, the weather in Chicago has been very spring-like, making it very possible that spring may be coming soon...maybe?

Bums & Stockings

Bumsbest Oh am just so in love with these knickers from SophistiKitten. Right now they have an offering of both cotton and silk side button French knickers as well as side tie silk knickers. I'm going to be placing my order soon!

Also, I found a new source for fully fashioned stockings, Christel. They are one of the few shops I know that carry my very favorite style of the Manhattan heel. Oh, how I love thee. Christel also offers "Imperfects," which are stockings that don't quite pass their quality control, for a reduced price. Great for getting FF or RHT stockings without breaking the bank.

Slips & Flibbertigibbets

doublespeak slip
I'm in love with my new slip from doublespeak. I really wanted to get her "Yours till niagara falls" full slip, but it isn't my size. Ah, maybe she'll make others with that saying.

I'm currently reading a book written in 1929 – one of the elderly characters referres to flappers as "those flibbertigibbets running about these days showing more of their legs than the Creator ever intended them to." Ha! I need to work "flibbertigibbets" into more conversations.

Lovely Keen Things

Wild Hibiscus Flowers in Syrup

It being Vday today, I figure I should post some celebratory love stuffs. Above is Wild Hibiscus Flowers in Syrup, perfect to pop into some bubbly when you want to up the mood. Not too pricey - $11 for eleven flowers or $35 for fifty flowers. Purchase online here.

More of a wine person? Well, after you finish your bottle, recycle your corks into a neat trivet! Remakeit - wine cork trivet. If you happen to get a surprise of being popped a certain little question, Whirling Turban has all you need for wonderful custom made vintage style wedding dress. Prices are pretty good too (considering most wedding dress prices), ranging from $200 to $900. Not a bad price tag for custom work.

Well, my boyfriend is coming in for a long weekend, so I'll be offline for a few days. (Oh, I can't wait until this quarter is over when the whole long distance thing will be no more!)
Happy weekend everyone!

Recording Music with Duke Ellington

Duke

Here's a great news reel showing how music was recorded and made into vinyl records. Pretty cool little clip and it's neat to see the behind the scenes of a Duke Ellington studio session.

Nookey Ration Card, Free Download

Nookey Ration Card

I saw this gag ration card made during WWII and knew I had to make a reproduction of it in pdf form. (Just in time for the romantic season!)

For those not up with your 30s and 40s slang: Nookey means *cough* sex, and "tearing one off" (a phrase seen in the card's text) also means the same. If you are interested in knowing more 30s and 40s slang, check out this website as well as this one.

Download Nookey Ration Card (1.1 MB)

Downloads elsewhere:
Geoff Stearns has downloads of two valentine cards from an episode of The Simpsons. Perhaps you remember a certain "I choo choo choose you" card? Well, he's got it, free to download! (Please note that the download is just of the .eps line art and that you would need to set it up as a card. Plus side is that you can change the colors to whatever you please.)
