Destination 1940 did a great post on how a list of Christmas gifts suggestions for women in 1942 compare to the same list in 2009 (post here). I thought it would be interesting to get this 1942 wish list and 'modernize' it for vintage enthusiasts, complete with where to buy or how to make the items. I've kept the actual 1942 gift item in bold, with my update (if any) in italics.
1. Ration Card Holder - Lipstick Case
Thankfully, women of our time do not have to fuss with ration cards. With this in mind, I thought about what a vintage lady needs, purse-carrying wise in these modern times that was similar. I think a lipstick holder with mirror is a great substitute.

2. Bathrobes
I don't know if it is me getting older or what, but I love bathrobes and bed jackets.

3. Bedsocks
"...perhaps imported English handmades with drawstrings and ball pompoms..."
I have been wanting bed socks for months now. My feet are always ice cold.

4. Electric Blanket - Hot Water Bottle
I'm a bit scared of electric blankets due to possible fire hazards, but I love hot water bottles!

5. Sweater
Chicago is going through a snow storm right now and I am of the opinion you can never have too many sweaters. You need something to brighten up the winter!

7. Garment Care Accessories
"...a
wood stretcher to insure that her home-washed sweaters will look
professionally blocked and wear better; mending kits of every
description, and a remarkably good-looking and hard-as-iron coverall
apron. This has the attached potholder and a pocket big enough for the
duster, as well as the furniture glue."
There is not really much I can add to that. I love house stuff and wouldn't mind getting an apron or basket to put my mending into. The ideas are endless.

8. Overalls - House Frocks
The point of this suggestion is that ladies need something they can be comfortable and work in. When I get home, one of the first things I do is change into my 'house clothes' to get comfortable. Having separate house clothes is great because I don't have to worry about further dirtying my 'street clothes' or tracking dirt from outside into my house. House frocks are also great for cleaning the house and doing other house chores.

9. Handkerchiefs
I love hankies. I carry two or three with me at all times. They come in handy not only for sniffles, but also if you need to clean up, dry something, or just need to wipe a little sweat off your brows.

10. American China - Glass Bakeware
I have been slowly getting rid of all my tupperware and replacing it with glassware that I can bake, serve and store in. I am an absolute sucker for Jadeite, which you can find plenty of on Etsy and Ebay. There are also a few reproductions of Jadeite out there too. If you are looking for clear or other colored bakeware I am a fan of Anchor Hocking and Pyrex.

So, what do you think of the 1942 gift list and my suggestions?
