I don't know that I've seen so much anticipation for a stamp in a long time. The U.S.P.S. is really promoting this new Harvey Milk stamp. If you don't know who Harvey Milk is, then prepare yourself for some cultural knowledge. He was one of the first openly gay elected officials and he campaigned not only for gay rights, but for the rights of everyone to be treated as equals. He was a civil rights champion and, by all accounts, a well-spoken man with a good sense of humor. His life was cut short by assassination, but his legacy continues. He is famously quoted as saying, “If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door.”
This stamp, featuring a photo of Milk, goes on sale tomorrow. There will be a First Day of Issue ceremony at the White House and also a dedication in San Francisco. I think it's a nice looking stamp, but I would have made the rainbow bigger. Perhaps they are trying to mimick the look of printing proofs? Milk owned a camera store... I dunno. It seems awkward. No matter though, look at that smile!
