Girl Guides Get Postal

My pen pal Julia spends part of her time volunteering with Girl Guides. She sent along this fun tale of a letter writing project from their camp this year:

"The Summer Guide Camp this year was themed on The Hobbit. Each day at camp was a different part of the story and on Monday we had got to the bit where Bilbo and the Dwarves are staying with Beorn and while they are there, they all sit round in the evening, telling stories of their journey and adventure. So with this in mind - we suggested to the girls that they might like to WRITE the story of their journey and adventure so far, in a letter home.

Some of the older girls had already spent a happy evening with coffee, paint brushes and plain paper, creating beautiful "aged parchment" paper for the girls to write on.  They had a choice of that or paper made out of old maps (in keeping with the "journey" theme, you see!!!)

Well, they all wrote their letters and a couple of days later when they were dry, we sent them off, but not before everyone had had a chance to seal them with real sealing wax - what fun!!!  (I only got a couple of small burns!) The local Postie may well have been mildly baffled as to quite why his post box smelt of coffee, but nevermind!"
