Oregon Humanities hosts a call for letters three times a year called "Dear Stranger". They ask you to write a personal letter to someone you’ve never let as part of their effort to engage Oregonians from all walks of life through the mail. The premise is simple: Write a letter, get a letter, and make a new connection. The summer 2015 prompt for letter writers is:
Write about safety: a time you took a risk or exercised caution, stirred up controversy or avoided it; or a place or experience or work of art that made you feel secure or uneasy.
Send your letters along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope and a signed permission form to Oregon Humanities. The address for participation is:
Dear Stranger
921 SW Washington St., Suite 150
Portland, Oregon, 97205
Letters for this project will be accepted through September 18, 2015. When you write to Dear Stranger, your letter will be swapped with that of another writer. They will get your letter; you will get theirs. Dear Stranger is open to everyone (not just people in Oregon, I checked), though writers under the age of 18 must have parental consent to participate. Letters are paired at random, and Oregon Humanities staff read all letters before they are exchanged. You don’t have to include any address information in your letter. If you want to write back to your stranger—and we hope you will—you can send a response through Oregon Humanities.
So Cool. Bummed I missed it, but hope to catch it next time :D
