February 4th is Mail Carrier Appreciation Day. Most mail carriers have an assigned route and they are out there working hard to get all that mail to your door. One of my penpals is collecting little thank you notes for her regular carrier from her various pals. How sweet! If you go the gifting route, remember the Federal guidelines for tipping:
All postal employees, including carriers, must comply with the Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch. Under these federal regulations, carriers are permitted to accept a gift worth $20 or less from a customer per occasion, such as Christmas. However, cash and cash equivalents, such as checks or gift cards that can be exchanged for cash, must never be accepted in any amount. Furthermore, no employee may accept more than $50 worth of gifts from any one customer in any one calendar year period.
Gift ideas include things like a new pair of gloves, a box of chocolate, a package of pens, or something else small and useful. Whatever you do, remember the people who are getting our mail around and remember to be grateful. We can't send our mail without them.
Thanks for keeping us informed. I now have a pack of Field Notes and a matching Sigmo pen packaged up for my carrier. Today he did us the kindness of letting us know one of the other carrier services - who shall remain nameless - left my package on a neighbor's porch rather than ours. (neighbor was away and didn't know about it) I would have had to go through the whole song-and-dance of reporting/replacing said package if it wasn't for him. Kudos to our Farley Station carrier here in OKC!

Thank you for this very informative post. I wrote a short letter of thanks and included two $2 each for the two people who are my mail carriers.
I joined the Letter Writers Alliance last week, and await my welcome letter with anticipation.

Hi Lori, Im so happy to welcome you, and am thrilled youre thinking of your carriers. I do want to remind you that in the blog post, I stated federal guidelines will prohibit your carrier from accepting cash. Maybe $2 bills wont count, but maybe they will.
