As someone who used to read the Post Office Guide for fun, I found this fascinating too. I'm disappointed to hear Ireland has got postcodes now.
Just a little nit-picking, though; franking is marking an envelope to show postage has been paid. Cancellation is marking an adhesive stamp to show it has been used, which is not quite the same.
