One of my favorite things about exploring about Chicago is going into old buildings and hotels and seeing their grand old mail chutes in use. The designs span all decades. There's the gilt and ornamentation of some contrasted to the sharp lines and contrast of the Art Deco look to others. The picture is from one in a church and I think the design attempts to be a little Medieval looking. According to this article at Atlas Obscura, there are over 360 Cutler mail chutes still operating in Chicago. There's over 900 still in use in New York City. How fun must it be to live in a building that still uses one of these grand devices?
P.S. Thanks to Member Chelsea for the link!
I wonder if there are some along the PATH in Toronto in the sections of the bank towers? I'll have to take a look :)
