I didn't make this up, pinkie swear. There is a castle-shaped observatory in Elk Mound, Wisconsin dedicated "in memoriam of the deceased rural letter carriers of Dunn County." It's colloquially know as Dead Mailman Castle. The view seems pretty nice, but it's said to be haunted.
According to an entry on Road Trip America, "This tower is set on the highest point of land for miles. You can see nearly a hundred miles in every direction. The flag on tower hill is visible for miles around. The tower was built in 1906 and reopened in 1998 after extensive renovations." As for the supernatural elements, as reported in the Haunted Chippewa Valley by Devon Bell, it is rumored that a young man fell to his death here in the 1980s. Visitors have reportedly felt sick, heard strange screams and laughter, or felt like they were being pushed down the stairs. Mists and odd lights have also been reported. A cached record at Mysterious Heartland claims that "According to an even wilder legend, a dragon is buried in the hill under the tower, making this setting very medieval indeed!"
You can visit Dead Mailman Castle in May through October; so if you want to get in a visit during spook season, plan on going before the snow closes the road. Of course, if you follow my motto that "Halloween is everyday" then every season is spook season!
Weird but cool. Thanks!
